Erna.
a female given name from German [in turn from Old High German].
Meaning & usage
a female given name from German [in turn from Old High German].
Where this word comes from
Borrowed from German Erna, a short form of Ernestine and Ernesta, feminine names derived from Ernst, ultimately from Old High German ernust (“serious, earnest”). First attested in the 18th century in Norway. The name is identical in form to Old Norse Erna, the name of Jarl's wife in the poem Rígsþula, traditionally connected with ern (“brisk, vigorous, hale”). It is uncertain whether this Old Norse name independently influenced modern Norwegian usage. Compare Danish Erna and Swedish Erna (“female given names”).
