Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse Eistland, from the Old Norse ethnonym eistr (“Estonian”) + land (“land, country”), literally “land of the Estonians”. The precise route into modern Norwegian is uncertain. The ethnonym belongs to an old Germanic naming tradition also represented by Ēste (“the Aestii”) and Ēstland (“land of the Aestii”). These forms are commonly connected with Latin Aestiī, the name used by Tacitus around 98 CE for a people living on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. It is uncertain whether the ancient Aestii can be identified directly with the ancestors of the modern Estonians, and the ultimate origin of the ethnonym is disputed. Compare Danish Estland, Swedish Estland, Faroese Estland, Icelandic Eistland, German Estland and Old English Ēstland (“Estonia”).
