Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse Finnland, from finnar (“Sami; Finns”) + land (“land, country”), literally “land of the Finns”. The name originally referred to the southwestern region now known as Egentliga Finland, before being extended to the whole country. Compare Swedish Finland, Faroese Finnland, Icelandic Finnland and the parallel Old English Finna land (“Lapland; land of the Sami”). The first element is commonly traced to *finnaz (“Sami; Finn”), of disputed origin; compare Old English Finn (“Sami”). The second element continues *landą (“land, country”) and is cognate with English land, Dutch land, German Land and Gothic 𐌻𐌰𐌽𐌳 (land, “land, country”).
