Ultimately from Middle Low German Frankrīke (“realm of the Franks; France”), from Old Saxon *Frankrīki. The Old Saxon form is composed of Proto-West Germanic *Frankō (“a Frank”) and *rīkī (“realm, kingdom”), literally “realm of the Franks”. Synchronically equivalent to the stem of franker (“Frank”) + rike (“realm, kingdom”). Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Frankrike, Danish Frankrig, Swedish Frankrike, Low German Frankriek, Dutch Frankrijk and German Frankreich (“France”).
