Internationalism, French Gabon, from Portuguese Gabão, originally the Portuguese name of the estuary now known as the Gabon Estuary. Portuguese navigators arriving on the coast in the fifteenth century called the estuary Rio de Gabão (“Gabon River”), from gabão (“hooded cloak, overcoat”), because its distinctive shape was thought to resemble such a garment. The French name was subsequently extended from the estuary to the surrounding colonial territory, and the modern country consequently takes its name from the Gabon Estuary. Ultimate origin of Portuguese gabão uncertain. Dicionário Infopédia da Língua Portuguesa derives the Portuguese word from Italian gabbano (“cloak”), ultimately from Arabic قَبَاء (qabāʾ, “garment, cloak”). Other etymologies have also been proposed, however, including derivation through Spanish gabán (“overcoat”), ultimate connection with Persian قبا (qabâ, “long garment”), and derivation from Late Latin forms related to capa (“cloak”). The deeper history of the Portuguese word therefore remains disputed. Parallel international adaptations include Danish Gabon, Swedish Gabon, German Gabun, Dutch Gabon, French Gabon and English Gabon.
