Where this word comes from

Internationalism, from the European name tradition associated with the Gambia River and the territory surrounding it; compare English Gambia, the name used during British rule. The modern country takes its name from the river. The river name is recorded in early European sources in several forms. The Venetian explorer Alvise Cadamosto, sailing in Portuguese service in 1455–1456, referred to the river as Gambra or Cambra; later forms included Gamba and Gambia. Portuguese navigators and traders were the first Europeans known to establish this naming tradition. Ultimate origin uncertain. Several explanations have been proposed: * Store norske leksikon derives Portuguese Gambra or Gambru from Mandinka Ba-Dimma, described as a local name for the Gambia River. * Other sources derive the name from Mandinka Kambra or Kambaa, referring to the Gambia River. * A local tradition recorded in the Historical Dictionary of The Gambia derives the name from Mandinka Kambi-yaa (“Kambi's country”), supposedly the answer given by a man named Kambi when early Portuguese visitors asked the name of the country. The specialist historical dictionary describes the origin and meaning of the name as unclear, so none of these explanations should be regarded as securely established. Parallel international adaptations include Danish Gambia, Swedish Gambia, German Gambia, Dutch Gambia, French Gambie and English Gambia.
