Where this word comes from
Inherited from Old Norse Gandvík (“Gandvik”). The Old Norse name is traditionally analysed as gandr (“staff, magic staff; sorcery”) + vík (“bay, inlet”), and hence interpreted as “bay of magic” or “enchanted bay”. The deeper origin is uncertain. Many scholars instead regard Gandvík as a folk-etymological adaptation of a Finnic place name, comparing Finnish Kantalahti, the name associated with the Kandalaksha Gulf. Under this interpretation, Finnish lahti (“bay, inlet”) was rendered as Old Norse vík (“bay, inlet”). By surface analysis, gand (“magic, sorcery”) + vik (“bay, inlet”). The name was later transferred to the bay in Nesseby, and the adjacent hamlet is named after the bay. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Gandvik and Icelandic Gandvík.
