Derived from Medieval Latin Geōrgia, itself from Classical Persian گرج (“Georgian”). The exact route by which the international Latin name entered Norwegian is uncertain. The Latin form was influenced by Geōrgius (“George”), reflecting the country’s association with Saint George, but the country name is not derived from the saint's name.
