Where this word comes from
From Ghana (“Ghana (historical kingdom)”) + rike (“realm, kingdom, empire”), with the second element in the definite singular; literally “the Ghana realm”. The historical name predates that of the modern state Ghana (“Ghana”). The medieval polity was called Wagadu by its rulers, while the name Ghana came from the ruler's title ghana, traditionally glossed as “war chief”. The further origin of the title is unknown. Compare Danish Ghanariget and Swedish Ghanariket (“Ghana Empire”).
