Where this word comes from
Inherited from Old Norse Guli, an old place name associated with the small peninsula Guløy and the fjord now called Gulafjorden. The present form is historically definite. The municipality was known as Evenvik until 1890, when Gulen became the official parish, clerical-district and municipal name. The deeper origin is uncertain. The name has been derived from Old Norse gul (“gust of wind”), or, probably, from the Germanic root *geul-, reflected in Old Norse gjól (“cleft”). The separate fjord name in Bremanger has the same two proposed explanations. The surname is habitational, transferred from the place name.
