Meaning & usage

name/ˈhansˌdatːər/
  1. a surname originating as a patronymic, historically meaning “daughter of Hans”; now also a rare hereditary surname

Where this word comes from

From Hans (“male given name”) + datter (“daughter”), historically a patronymic meaning “daughter of Hans”. Unlike a hereditary surname, the traditional patronymic identified the bearer through her father's given name and ordinarily changed between generations. The form is now also retained as a rare hereditary surname. Compare Danish Hansdatter, Swedish Hansdotter and Icelandic Hansdóttir (“female patronymic”).
