Where this word comes from
Borrowed from Swedish IKEA, a lexicalized acronym formed from the initial letters of Ingvar Kamprad, Elmtaryd and Agunnaryd. It is named after Swedish entrepreneur Ingvar Kamprad, while the final two initials refer to the farm where he grew up and the parish and nearby village. Elmtaryd is now spelled Älmtaryd. The trading company was registered on 28 July 1943. Early wordmarks used forms such as ikéa and IKÉA. The acute accent was reportedly inspired by the French pen manufacturer La Société Evergood, for which Kamprad was the general agent, and probably helped establish the pronunciation of the acronym as a single word rather than as four separate letter names. Upper-case lettering became standard during the 1950s, and the accent was removed in 1962.
