Where this word comes from
Internationalism, borrowed from Latin Iapetus (“Iapetos”), from Ancient Greek Ἰαπετός (Iapetós, “Iapetos”), possibly of Pre-Greek origin. The moon of Saturn was discovered by Giovanni Domenico Cassini in 1671 and was later named after the mythological Iapetos. The name was proposed by John Herschel in 1847 as part of his naming scheme for Saturn's moons. The geological name was introduced by W. Brian Harland and Rodney A. Gayer in 1972 for the prehistoric ocean that preceded the Atlantic. The name was chosen because the mythological Iapetos was the father of Atlas, whose name ultimately gave rise to the name of the Atlantic Ocean.
