The traditional European biblical form was transmitted through Latin Israel (“Israel”), from Ancient Greek Ἰσραήλ (Israḗl, “Israel”), from Biblical Hebrew יִשְׂרָאֵל (Yiśrāʾēl, “Israel”). In the Bible, the name is given to the patriarch Jacob after he wrestles with God. It was subsequently applied to his descendants, the Israelite people, and their land; the modern state, established in 1948, took its name from this biblical usage.
