Meaning & usage

name/¹iˈtɑː.li.a/[ɪˈtɑ̀ː.lɪ.ǎ]
  1. Italy; a country in Southern Europe, Europe, with Roma as its capital.

    Roma er hovedstaden i Italia.
Where this word comes from

Probably from Italian Italia (“Italy”); the exact immediate route into Norwegian is not securely documented. The Italian form is from Latin Italia (“Italy”), via Ancient Greek Ῑ̓ταλίᾱ (Ītalíā, “Italy”), possibly from Oscan 𐌅𐌝𐌕𐌄𐌋𐌉𐌞 (víteliú, “land of bulls”), traditionally connected with vitulus (“calf”). Another ancient explanation associates the name with a people called the Itali. The name originally denoted the southern tip of the Italian peninsula and was gradually extended northwards. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Italia, Faroese Italia, Finnish Italia, Icelandic Ítalía, Spanish Italia and Romanian Italia (“Italy”).
