Meaning & usage

name/ˈjɑːna/
  1. a female given name from Johana [in turn from Latin, in turn from Koine Greek, in turn from Biblical Hebrew] or from Jan, equivalent to English Jane, contracted from Johana or derived from Jan

Where this word comes from

Originally a contracted Norwegian form of Johana, a variant of Johanna. This explains the earliest use of the name in Norway. It was later also interpreted as a feminine derivative of Jan. Both source names belong to the Johannes name family. Johanna continues Latin Iohanna, from Koine Greek Ἰωάννα (Iōánna), the feminine form of Ἰωάννης (Iōánnēs), ultimately from Biblical Hebrew יְהוֹחָנָן (Yəhōḥānān, “Yahweh is gracious”). Compare Danish Jana, Swedish Jana and German Jana (“female given name”).
