The first element is unknown; the final element continues Old Norse nes (“headland, promontory”). Oluf Rygh tentatively connected the first element with the old district name Jessum in Ullensaker, represented by Old Norse Jaseimr and Jesseimr, but noted that other possible explanations were incompatible with the early form. First attested in 1346 as Jæsnes.
