Where this word comes from
Coined as Jøtunheimen by Aasmund Olavsson Vinje in 1862, from jotun (“giant, jötunn”) + heim (“home”), with the second element in the definite singular heimen (“the home”), literally “the home of the giants”. The name alludes to the wild mountain landscape and to the jotnene (“the giants”) of Norse mythology. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Jotunheimen (“mountain massif in Norway”).
