Derived from Latin Iūlius (“Roman family name”), of uncertain origin. The Latin name has variously been explained as a contraction of a reconstructed Old Latin personal name meaning “descended from or pertaining to Jove”, or as deriving from Ancient Greek ἴουλος (íoulos, “down; first growth of the beard”); it has also been associated with the mythological Iulus, son of Aeneas. In Norway, the name is first attested in the early 17th century, with the earliest documented use from Hadsel in Nordland.
