Internationalism, based on Latin Iuppiter (“Jupiter, the chief Roman god”), also Iūpiter. The Latin nominative continues an ancient vocative expression combining the name of the sky god with pater (“father”), essentially “Father Jove”; compare the oblique stem Iov-, seen in the genitive Iovis. The name continues Proto-Italic *djous patēr (“sky father”), from *djous (“day, sky”) + *patēr (“father”), ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *dyḗws (“sky; sky god”) and *ph₂tḗr (“father”). The first element belongs to the Proto-Indo-European root *dyew- (“to be bright; day sky”). The astronomical sense is transferred from the name of the deity. In the Greco-Roman planetary naming tradition, the planet came to bear the name of Jupiter, the supreme Roman god. Close cognates of the ancient divine title include Umbrian 𐌉𐌖𐌐𐌀𐌕𐌄𐌓 (iupater, “Jupiter”), Sanskrit द्यौष्पितृ (dyauṣpitṛ, “Sky Father”) and Ancient Greek Ζεῦ πάτερ (Zeû páter, “O father Zeus”). The first element also has cognates Hittite 𒅆𒄿𒌑𒍑, Old Armenian տիւ (tiw), Messapic ζισ (zis) and Lithuanian dievas (“god”).

Borrowed from English Jupiter (“Jupiter, Florida”). The place name has a distinct history from the directly mythological and astronomical senses above. According to the official history of the Town of Jupiter, Spanish maps of the area showed the local river as Rio Jobe, the second element apparently referring to the indigenous Jobe people who inhabited the area. After Britain acquired Florida from Spain in 1763, British mapmakers encountered the name Jobe and reinterpreted or Anglicized it as Jove (“Jupiter”), the Roman god's alternative English name. The resulting association with Jove led in turn to the place name Jupiter. Thus the modern name ultimately converged with the name of the Roman deity through a folk-etymological reinterpretation rather than through a straightforward original dedication to the god. The related nearby name Juno was subsequently chosen after Juno, Jupiter's wife in Roman mythology.

Borrowed from Romanian Jupiter (“Jupiter, Romanian seaside resort”), itself named after Jupiter (“Jupiter, the planet”). The resort was created during the large-scale development of Romania's southern Black Sea coast in the late 1960s and early 1970s. It belongs to a deliberately astronomical series of neighbouring resort names which includes Neptun, Venus and Saturn, all named after planets; Romanian sources commonly refer to these resorts collectively as the “planets” of the coast. Accounts of the naming policy connect the choice of planetary names both with the contemporary fascination with space exploration and with a desire for short, internationally recognizable names that foreign tourists could easily remember and pronounce. The exact date at which Jupiter first opened to tourists is reported differently by modern sources.
