Internationalism, ultimately from Portuguese Camarões (“Cameroon”), after Portuguese Rio dos Camarões (River of Shrimps), an early name for the present-day Wouri River, given because of the abundance of shrimp in the river. The name contains the plural of camarão (“shrimp, prawn”), from Latin cammārus (“lobster”), with Portuguese -ão (“augmentative suffix”), ultimately from Ancient Greek κάμμαρος (kámmaros, “a kind of lobster or shrimp”), from Pre-Greek. The further origin is unknown. The immediate donor of the Norwegian form is unknown. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Kamerun, Swedish Kamerun, German Kamerun, Dutch Kameroen, French Cameroun and English Cameroon.
