Meaning & usage
a female given name from Old Norse [in turn from Ancient Greek], equivalent to English Karina
Where this word comes from
Inherited from Old Norse Kaðrina (“female given name”), a later form of Katrina (“female given name”), ultimately from Ancient Greek Αἰκατερίνη (Aikaterínē, “female given name”). In Old Norse, the consonant sequence in Katrina developed from tr to ðr, after which ð was lost, yielding Karina. The original meaning is uncertain, though the name was associated early with καθαρός (katharós, “pure, chaste”). First attested in the 15th century in Norway. Compare Danish Karina, Swedish Karina and Faroese Karina (“female given name”).
