Where this word comes from
From an old genitival form of the river name now represented by Kinso, and vík (“bay, cove”), hence “the bay of Kinso”. The river name is related to kinn (“cheek; steep mountainside”), referring to the steep-sided valley through which the river flows. The name originally belonged to the farm and parish where Kinsarvik Church was built, and was subsequently transferred to the settlement and municipality. The historical spelling Kinservik was replaced by Kinsarvik as the official municipal spelling in 1917. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Kinsarvik (“village, parish and former municipality”).
