Where this word comes from
Internationalism, ultimately from Arabic جُزُر الْقُمُر (juzur al-qumur, “Comoros; traditionally interpreted as Islands of the Moon”), adapted in Norwegian with the native definite plural ending -ene (“definite plural ending”), as in Seychellene (“Seychelles”). The immediate transmission route into Norwegian is unknown. The Arabic name contains جُزُر (juzur, “islands”) and a geographical name traditionally associated with Arabic قَمَر (qamar, “moon”). The historical motivation of the name is uncertain. The name Qumr or Qomr was used by medieval Arab geographers for Madagascar or a broader southern region before subsequently being applied to the Comoros. A connection with the historical “Mountains of the Moon” tradition has been proposed, but is uncertain. Compare the parallel formations Norwegian Nynorsk Komorane, Danish Comorerne, Swedish Komorerna, German Komoren, French Comores and English Comoros.
