Internationalism, based ultimately on Portuguese Congo, from the name of the Kongo people and their kingdom, perhaps from Kongo nkongo (“hunter”). Another proposal connects the ethnonym with konga (“to gather”); its precise formation remains uncertain. The river was named after the people and kingdom, and the two modern states were in turn named after the river. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Kongo, Danish Congo, Swedish Kongo, German Kongo, Dutch Congo and English Congo.
