Where this word comes from

Internationalism, based on Medieval Latin Croātia (“Croatia”). The Medieval Latin name is conventionally traced to Ancient Greek Χρωβατία (Khrōbatía, “Croatia”), formed from Χρωβάτος (Khrōbátos, “Croat”) and the place-name suffix -ία (-ía), literally “land of the Croats”. The ethnonym ultimately reflects Proto-Slavic *xъrvatъ (“Croat”), of uncertain deeper origin. One modern proposal derives the ethnonym from an Iranian form meaning “guardian, protector”, but this remains disputed. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Kroatia, Faroese Kroatia, Icelandic Króatía, Finnish Kroatia, Lithuanian Kroatija and Danish Kroatien (“Croatia”).
