Where this word comes from

Internationalism, based on Latvian Latvija (“Latvia”). The Latvian name is a 19th-century formation from latvis (“Latvian, Lett”) and the country-name suffix -ija. It is first recorded in a Latvian text in 1862 and became established later in the century. The underlying ethnonym is considerably older, but its deeper origin is uncertain. A connection with a local river name has been proposed. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Latvia, English Latvia, Finnish Latvia, Lithuanian Latvija, Serbo-Croatian Latvija and Slovene Latvija (“Latvia”).
