Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Latin Libya, from Ancient Greek Λιβύη (Libúē). The Ancient Greek name is based on the ethnonym of the Libu, a North African people whose name is attested in Egyptian as rbw (“Libu; Libya”) and later in Punic as 𐤋𐤁𐤉 (lby). The immediate transmission route into Norwegian is unknown. In ancient Greek geography, the name originally referred to the land west of the Nile and was later extended to Africa as a whole. The modern state name revives this ancient geographical name; Tripolitania, Cyrenaica and Fezzan were brought together under Italian colonial administration under the name Libya. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Libya, Danish Libyen, Swedish Libyen, German Libyen, Dutch Libië, French Libye and English Libya.
