Where this word comes from
Borrowed from German Liechtenstein. The country was named after the princely House of Liechtenstein, which acquired the territories of Schellenberg and Vaduz; these were united and elevated to the Principality of Liechtenstein in 1719. The family took its name from Liechtenstein Castle in Lower Austria. The castle name is traditionally interpreted as literally “bright stone”, from Middle High German lieht (“light, bright”) and stein (“stone”). The first documented member of the family to bear the name was Hugo von Liechtenstein, mentioned between 1120 and 1143. Parallel borrowings include Norwegian Nynorsk Liechtenstein, Danish Liechtenstein, Swedish Liechtenstein, Dutch Liechtenstein, Finnish Liechtenstein and French Liechtenstein.
