Where this word comes from
Internationalism, ultimately based on Middle French Madagascar, from the medieval form Madageiscar, recorded by Marco Polo. The deeper origin of the medieval name is unknown. A traditional hypothesis connects Madageiscar with Arabic مَقْدِيشُو (maqdīšū, “Mogadishu”), the name of the Somali city, through a geographical confusion in Marco Polo's account. Another proposal connects the name with Arabic جَزِيرَة المَالَائِيّ (jazīra(t) al-mālāʔiyy, “Island of Mālāī”), a name occurring in the geographical tradition of al-Idrisi. Neither explanation is certain. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Madagaskar, Danish Madagaskar, Swedish Madagaskar, German Madagaskar, Finnish Madagaskar and English Madagascar.
