Inherited from Old Norse Magnús, from Latin Magnus (“male given name”), a personal-name use of the adjective magnus (“great, large”). First attested in the 11th century in Norway. According to saga tradition, Sigvat Tordarson named the future Magnus the Good after Charlemagne, known in Latin as Carolus Magnus (“Charles the Great”).
