Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based ultimately on Ancient Greek Μᾰκεδονῐ́ᾱ (Măkedonĭ́ā, “Macedonia”); the name was transmitted widely through Latin Macedonia (“Macedonia”) and later European languages. The Ancient Greek name is from Μᾰκεδών (Măkedṓn, “a Macedonian”) and the place-name suffix -ῐ́ᾱ (-ĭ́ā). The ethnonym is traditionally connected with μᾰκεδνός (măkednós, “tall, tapering”); Beekes instead derives this adjective from Pre-Greek, though this analysis has been disputed. Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Makedonia, Danish Makedonien, Swedish Makedonien, German Makedonien, Dutch Macedonië, Greek Μακεδονία (Makedonía), Macedonian Македонија (Makedonija) and English Macedonia.
