Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Chichewa Maláŵi (“Malawi”). The immediate transmission route into Norwegian is unknown. The name is traditionally explained from Chichewa malaŵí (“flames”). In Chewa oral tradition, Malawi was the name of an area around the lake, which was said to resemble flames or a mirage when viewed from the surrounding highlands. Early Portuguese sources rendered the name as Maravj or Maravy, whence the conventional name Maravi for the precolonial state in the region. The modern country adopted the name Malawi when it became independent in 1964, replacing the colonial name Nyasaland. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Malawi, Danish Malawi, Swedish Malawi, German Malawi, Dutch Malawi and English Malawi.
