Where this word comes from

Internationalism, based on Italian Malta and Maltese Malta. These forms ultimately continue Arabic مَالِطَا (māliṭā, “Malta”), from Latin Melita (“Malta”), from Ancient Greek Μελίτη (Melítē, “Malta”). The deeper origin of the Greek name is uncertain. It has traditionally been connected with μέλι (méli, “honey”), perhaps referring to the island’s honey production, while a derivation from a Phoenician word associated with refuge or a safe harbour has also been proposed. Parallel international adaptations include Danish Malta, Swedish Malta, German Malta, Dutch Malta, Finnish Malta and French Malte (“Malta”).
