Internationalism, ultimately from Latin Mārs (“Mars, the Roman god of war”), genitive Mārtis, from Old Latin Old Latin Māvors (“Mars”). The Old Latin form is generally derived from Proto-Italic *Māwortis, although an alternative reconstruction *Māmart- has also been proposed; the latter would require an otherwise unusual change of medial *-m-* to *-w-*. Cognate with Oscan 𐌌𐌀𐌌𐌄𐌓𐌔 (mamers, “Mars”), and compare the archaic form Māmartei, attested on the Lapis Satricanus. A possible further relationship with Sanskrit मरुत् (marut, “Marut, one of the storm gods”) has been proposed, but remains uncertain. The astronomical sense is transferred from the name of the deity. The planet was associated with Mars because its reddish appearance evoked blood and warfare. Parallel international forms include Danish Mars, Swedish Mars, German Mars, Dutch Mars, French Mars, Icelandic Mars, English Mars.

For the Californian place-name senses, borrowed from Borrowed from English Mars (“Mars”). The name refers independently to a populated place in San Bernardino County and to a former name of Outingdale in El Dorado County. The origins of these English place names have not been securely established in the sources checked, and no historical connection between the two names has been established.

Borrowed from English Mars (“Mars, Texas”). The community was named for the early settlers John and Henry Marrs, described in the Handbook of Texas as the eponymous brothers. The source does not explain the difference in spelling between Marrs and the place name Mars.

Borrowed from French Mars (“Mars, a former commune in Gard”). The local Provençal form is Mars, ultimately from Latin Martium, described in the source as Low Latin.

Borrowed from English Mars (“Mars, Pennsylvania”). The origin of the English place name is disputed. In 1873, Samuel Parks established a local post office with the help of Samuel Marshall. According to the borough's official history, one tradition says that Parks's wife, who was interested in astronomy, suggested the name, while another says that it honoured Samuel Marshall; the latter is described as the prevailing local view. The name was later also adopted for the railway stop, replacing Overbrook.

Borrowed from English Mars (“Mars, Nebraska”). The settlement received its name in 1886 to complement the nearby community of Venus.

Borrowed from Ukrainian Марс (Mars, “Mars, a village in Ukraine”). According to local tradition, the village was named in 1924 after Марс (Mars, “Mars, the planet”), amid widespread publicity surrounding the “great opposition of Mars” that year. Ukrainian sources present this as a legend rather than a firmly documented naming event.

Borrowed from French Mars (“Mars, a commune in Ardèche”). The commune was called Saint-Romain-le-Désert until 1909, when it adopted the name of the older and more populous hamlet of Mars. According to the French cultural-heritage inventory, the hamlet's name may derive from a Roman temple dedicated to the god Mārs (“Mars”) beside the Roman road that crossed the area.

Borrowed from English Mars (“Mars, the company and chocolate-bar brand”), from the surname Mars of the founding family. The family business was established by Frank C. Mars and later developed into Mars, Incorporated. His son Forrest Mars Sr. moved to Britain in 1932 and created the Mars chocolate bar that year. The company sense is a clipping of the full company name Mars Incorporated. The chocolate-bar sense uses the same family and company name. The deeper origin of the founding family's surname has not been securely established here.
