Where this word comes from
Internationalism, ultimately from Latin Maurītānia (“Mauretania; land of the Moors”), the name of an ancient Berber kingdom and later Roman province in northwestern Africa. The Latin name is from Latin Maurītānus (“Mauritanian; one of the Moors”), from Latin Maurus (“Moor”), ultimately from Ancient Greek Μαῦρος (Maûros, “Moor”). The modern West African country was named after ancient Mauretania, although the ancient territory lay mainly in what is now Morocco and western Algeria. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Mauritania, Danish Mauretanien, Swedish Mauretanien, German Mauretanien, French Mauritanie and English Mauritania.
