Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on the name of the island, which the Dutch named Mauritzeiland (“Maurits Island”) in 1598 after Maurits van Nassau, Prince of Orange and stadtholder of the Dutch Republic. The Dutch name consists of the personal name Maurits (“Maurice”) and eiland (“island”). The modern country subsequently took its name from the island. The personal name Maurits continues Latin Mauritius (“Maurice”), an extension of Latin Maurus (“Moor; inhabitant of Mauretania”), itself borrowed from Ancient Greek Μαῦρος (Maûros, “Moor”). The ultimate origin of the Ancient Greek term is uncertain; one theory connects it with μαυρός (maurós, “black”), from ἀμαυρός (amaurós, “dark, dusky”), while another derives it from a native name of the Moors. Compare also Ancient Greek Ancient Greek Μαυρίκιος (Mauríkios, “Maurice”) and Latin Mauricius (“Maurice”), which may represent borrowing from the Greek form or parallel formation. Parallel international adaptations of the country name include Norwegian Nynorsk Mauritius, Danish Mauritius, Swedish Mauritius, German Mauritius, French Maurice and English Mauritius.
