Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Latin Mercurius (“Mercury, the Roman god; the planet Mercury”). The Norwegian form is a shortened adaptation of the Latin name, with final -ius omitted. The Latin name itself is of uncertain origin, possibly connected with merx (“merchandise, goods”), or perhaps ultimately from Etruscan and subsequently influenced by Latin merx. The astronomical sense is named after the Roman deity. The association reflects Mercury's traditional swiftness; the planet moves around the Sun faster than any other planet, completing an orbit in about 88 Earth days. Compare Danish Merkur, German Merkur, Czech Merkur, Swedish Merkurius, Finnish Merkurius, French Mercure and English Mercury.
