Internationalism, borrowed from Latin Mimās, from Ancient Greek Μῐ́μᾱς (Mĭ́mās), the name of several figures in Greek mythology, including one of the Gigantes. The moon was discovered by William Herschel in 1789 and was named after the mythological Mimas. The name was proposed by Herschel's son John Herschel in 1847, together with names for the other then-known moons of Saturn.
