Where this word comes from

Internationalism, based on Romanian Moldova. The name originally denoted a river in present-day Romania and was later transferred to the surrounding region and the medieval principality, from which the modern country takes its name. The deeper origin of the river name is disputed. One modern proposal derives the earliest recorded form, Moldua, from an unattested Old Germanic form *moldwa, interpreted as referring to loose soil along the riverbanks. Celtic, Iranian, Slavic and other old Germanic explanations have also been proposed. Parallel international adaptations include Danish Moldova, Estonian Moldova, Finnish Moldova, Latvian Moldova, Portuguese Moldova and Turkish Moldova (“Moldova”).
