Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on French Monaco and Italian Monaco. The modern forms ultimately continue Latin Monoecus (“Monaco”), from Ancient Greek Μόνοικος (Mónoikos, “ancient name of Monaco”). The Greek name is probably of native Ligurian origin. In antiquity, it was associated with Heracles Monoikos and popularly interpreted as “the solitary Heracles” or “the one who dwells alone”, through μόνος (mónos, “alone”) and οἶκος (oîkos, “house”). Parallel international adaptations include Danish Monaco, Swedish Monaco, German Monaco, Dutch Monaco, Finnish Monaco and Romanian Monaco.
