Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Venetan Montenegro (“Montenegro; literally “black mountain””), from mónte (“mountain”) + negro (“black”), a calque of Serbo-Croatian Cȓnā Gòra (“Montenegro; literally “black mountain””), referring to Mount Lovćen. The corresponding Italian form Montenegro became the international name. The first element derives from Latin montem (“mountain”), the accusative singular of mōns (“mountain”), while the second derives from Latin nigrum (“black”), the accusative masculine singular of niger (“black”). Compare the parallel borrowings Norwegian Nynorsk Montenegro, Danish Montenegro, Dutch Montenegro, English Montenegro, German Montenegro and Swedish Montenegro (“Montenegro”).
