Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on Portuguese Moçambique (“Mozambique”). The Portuguese name was first applied to the Island of Mozambique and its settlement and was later extended to the surrounding colonial territory and ultimately to the modern country. The island's name is generally traced to a local Arab ruler encountered by the Portuguese in the late 15th century, whose name is recorded in varying forms such as Ali Musa Mbiki, Mussa Ben-Bique and Mussa Al-Mbique. The identifiable given-name element مُوسَى (mūsā, “Moses; Musa”) is from Classical Syriac ܡܘܼܫܹܐ (“Moses”), from Biblical Hebrew מֹשֶׁה (“Moses”). The deeper origin of the Hebrew name is uncertain, and the origin and exact form of the remaining Mbiki/Bique element are unclear. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Mosambik, German Mosambik, Finnish Mosambik, Polish Mozambik, Swedish Moçambique and English Mozambique.
