Where this word comes from
Internationalism, based on English Namibia, coined in 1959 by the Namibian nationalist Mburumba Kerina from English Namib (“Namib Desert”) and New Latin -ia (“country-name-forming suffix”). The name refers to the Namib Desert, whose name is from Khoekhoe namib (“walkabout; wasteland”), from Khoekhoe nami (“to walk about”). The Khoekhoe name has consequently also been interpreted as referring to an empty or desolate area. The territory had previously been known internationally as South West Africa. The name Namibia was adopted by the United Nations in 1968, before the country became independent in 1990. Parallel international adaptations include Norwegian Nynorsk Namibia, Danish Namibia, Swedish Namibia, German Namibia and English Namibia.
