Meaning & usage
a municipality of Buskerud, Norway
a town in Nesbyen, Buskerud, Norway, the administrative centre of the municipality
Where this word comes from
From Nes (“headland; place name”) + byen (“the town”), literally “the town at Nes”. The first element is from Nes, from the common noun nes (“headland, point of land”), from Old Norse nes (“headland, promontory”), from Proto-Germanic *nasją (“headland, cape”), ultimately related to *nasō (“nose”). The second element byen (“the town”) is the definite singular of by (“town, city”), inherited from Danish by, from Old Norse býr (“place to settle; settlement”), derived from búa (“to dwell, live”). The municipality was called Nes until 2020, when its name was changed to Nesbyen to avoid confusion with Nes in Akershus. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Nesbyen (“place name”).
