Where this word comes from

Internationalism, based on French Niger, the French name of the country and the Niger River. The country is named after the river. The river name has been variously explained. Store norske leksikon derives it from Tuareg n'igherren (“flowing water; river”). Another commonly cited analysis connects it with a Tuareg expression egereou n-igereouen, literally “river of rivers”. The exact historical form and deeper origin of the river name are uncertain. The modern European spelling was probably influenced by Latin niger (“black”), but the river name is not generally considered to derive from the Latin adjective. Parallel international forms include Norwegian Nynorsk Niger, Danish Niger, Swedish Niger, German Niger and English Niger.
