Where this word comes from

Inherited from Old Norse Noregr, from earlier Norvegr, itself from Norðvegr. Traditionally analysed as norðr (“north”) + vegr (“way, road”), literally “north way”. An alternative interpretation connects the first element with reconstructed Old Norse *nór (“narrow sound, strait”), referring to the route along Norway's narrow fjords and sounds. Compare Norwegian Nynorsk Noreg, Danish Norge, Swedish Norge, Faroese Noreg and Icelandic Noregur (“Norway”). English Norway is descended from Old English Norþweġ, a calque of the Old Norse name.
