Where this word comes from
First attested in 1920, when the former municipality was established, as a new name for the settlement previously called Orkedalsøren, also written Orkdalsøren and, in modernized form, Orkdalsøra; locally it was known as Øra. Coined from Ork-, the first element of Orkla and Orkdal, and -anger, from Old Norse angr (“inlet, bay, fjord”). The river-name element is reconstructed as Old Norse *Ork and has traditionally been connected with orka (“to work, labour”), perhaps in reference to the river's strong current, but this interpretation is uncertain. Compare Orkland, formed from the same river-name element, and Hardanger, Stavanger and Varanger, older place names containing the same final element.
