Where this word comes from
Ultimately unknown. The river's original name is reconstructed as Old Norse *Ork. The present form Orkla may have developed from the name of its source lake, Orkelsjøen, whose older form is reconstructed as *Orkill or *Orkull. The older river name has traditionally been connected with orka (“to work, labour”), perhaps referring to the river's strong current, but it has alternatively been interpreted as an Old European river name; both explanations are uncertain. Compare Orkanger, Orkdal, Orkland and Orkelsjøen, which preserve or are formed from the same river-name element.
