Where this word comes from
First attested in 1920 as a newly coined name based on the river name Orkla, with land (“land, territory”) as the second element. The first element ultimately reflects the reconstructed Old Norse river name *Ork, of uncertain origin; it has traditionally been connected with orka (“to work, labour”), perhaps in reference to the river's strong current. The present municipality, established in 2020, reused the historical name. Compare Orkanger and Orkdal, formed from the same river-name element.
